The Latest Update March 13, 1999

Petition Results Expected Monday, March 15th

Petition count expected to be close - Valley Residents put on alert for supplemental 15 day Petition Drive to make up shortage if count found to be short

The Los Angeles County LAFCO (Local Agency Formation Commission) announced that the County Registrar's Office will announce the results of the petition drive on Monday March 15th. The Valley must collect signatures from at least 25 of the registered voters or 131,700 signatures in order to initiate the LAFCO Study. In December, San Fernando Valley residents submitted over 202,000 to LAFCO,

Valley VOTE believes the Valley has collected enough valid signatures but the count is expected to be close. Nevertheless, A percentage of the signatures collected will not be valid because they are not registered voters, don't live in the area or are duplicate signatures.

Valley leaders are hoping for the best but planning for the worst, just to be prepared. If the Valley is short, based on the County's random sample test we will be no more than 3,000 to 5,000 signatures short and the Valley will be given 15 additional days to collect additional signatures.

Plan of Action Prepared - Just in Case

Valley leaders have prepared the following plan of action if the 15-day additional period is required:

I. Valley VOTE will mail a petition to each of the 1800 volunteers who collected signatures during the petition drive. Each volunteer will be asked to collect at least three additional signatures

2. Petitioners will be going door to door throughout the Valley each evening and weekend during the 15-day period

Valley VOTE will mail a petition and a registration form to individuals who signed the petition but who's signature did not count because they were not properly registered, They will be asked to re-register and resign the petition.

If the results are announced on the 15"', the 15 day additional period begins the very next day. All additional signatures must be turned in to LAFCO by the end of the 1 5th day which is March 30th Time will be short and Valley residents must be prepared to respond and act fast. If the count finds that the Valley is short and you are willing to help collect a few additional signatures please call the office (818) 501-5862 and a petition will be mailed to you.

Hopefully, Monday, Match 15 will bring good news and there will be no need to implement these emergency measures.
