Valley VOTE is a diverse, Valley-wide coalition of San Fernando Valley
residents, educators, business leaders, community activists and organizations who support
a LAFCO study (Los Angeles County Local Agency Formation Commission) on the issue of
creating an independent Valley City.
More Reasons why San Fernando Valley Residents
want to explore Cityhood...
Some believe Los Angeles has become too large!
- With 3.6 million residents, Los Angeles has more population then 25 states.
- Los Angeles is so large you could fit St. Louis, Milwaukee,
Cleveland, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Pittsburgh and Manhattan all within the Los Angeles
City boundaries.
- The 15 member council system was setup in 1876 when Los Angeles had only 9,000
residents. Today, each council member represents 230,000 residents. Most major cities have
one council member per 20,000 to 40,000 residents.
Some residents believe the Valley does not receive its fair share!
The Valley contains 35% of the Los Angeles City population and roughly 50% of the
geographic area of Los Angeles City, yet,
- Of 6.6 million library books in Los Angeles City Libraries, only 1.2 million are in the
Valley.
- The Valley has 9 libraries per 100 sq. miles compared to 18 libraries per 100 sq. miles
in the rest of the city.
- The Valley paid 1.3 billion dollars in Prop A & C funds over the last 10
years, but has no mass transit system. The the rest of the city has the Red, Blue, and
Green Lines.
- Of the $666 million dollar MTA budget the Valley will only received $5 million this
year.
- Of the 34 major museums in Los Angeles, only one is in the Valley.. the Gene Autry
Museum.
- There are 2.0 police officers per 1000 residents in the rest of the city and only 1.2
police officers per 1000 residents in the Valley.
- Last year the city spent $28 million resurfacing streets but only $4 million in the
Valley.
The Valley as a City!
- The Valley as a City, with approximately 1.4 million residents, would be the sixth
largest city in the United States .
- The Valley would rank as the safest city of the nations 10 largest Cities.
- The Valley as a city would be rich in diversity with 40% of Valley residents
representing minority communities and diverse cultures.
What People Think about Valley Cityhood!
In March 1998 a poll of voters in the San Fernando Valley was conducted on the issue of
Valley Cityhood, Charter Reform and the publics satisfaction with the current City
Government.
- 72.6% of the Valley Voters said they believe a Valley City would be more efficient
- 64.5% believe their quality of life would be better if the Valley became a city.
- Valley residents said they want to see decisions about Valley issues decided in the
Valley, want Valley Tax dollars kept in the Valley to pay for its fair share of services.
- Valley residents want a smaller more responsive and efficient Valley government.
- 81.2% favor having the question of Valley Cityhood put on the ballot for a vote of the
public.
- 8 out of 10 voters are willing to sign the petitions required to start the LAFCO process
to study thre issues.
- Support for exploring Valley Cityhood and putting the issue on the ballot was high among
all ethnic groups, supported in all geographic areas of the Valley, and by people across
all socio-economic levels.
If a vote on Valley Cityhood were held in March 1998, it would have won by a 2 to 1
margin.
